Ten thousand students celebrate national folklore and traditions,
promoting the richness of Chinese culture

Macau, July 19, 2023 — Co-organized by the Wynn Care Foundation and the National Conditions Education (Macau) Association, the seventh Wynn Cup – Macau Primary School Student National Education Drawing Competition hosted its awards ceremony at Wynn Palace on July 19, 2023. This year's competition was supervised by the Economic Affairs Department of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macao SAR and supported by the Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Macau SAR Government, as well as Macau Productivity and Technology Transfer Center as co-organizer of the fashion show. The event was also selected as part of the 2023 Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area Youth Public Welfare Annual Meeting co-organized by the China Soong Ching Ling Foundation. This year, a creative new augmented reality (AR) visual display element was introduced to further broaden the event’s audience. The competition attracted participation from approximately 10,000 primary school students from 52 schools in Macau.

The theme for this year’s competition, “Inherit Folklore Traditions – Promote Excellent Culture,” was chosen with the goal of encouraging children to portray scenes of iconic Chinese festivals and the twenty-four solar terms through their artistic talents, absorbing and sharing the profound connotations of China’s rich traditional culture. Not only does this help promote key virtues and cultivate sincere appreciation, but it also perpetuates longstanding customs and enlivens the cultural consciousness of Macau's youth, instilling a deep-seated sense of national pride and cultural confidence.

In her keynote speech, Ms. Linda Chen, President and Vice Chairman of the Board of Wynn Macau, Limited, and Chairman of the Wynn Care Foundation, said that, “The Chinese nation has a rich history of more than 5,000 years, and its folk customs and traditional festivals stand as the embodiment of national wisdom and outstanding traditional Chinese culture. This competition aims to embed a keen appreciation of this heritage in the foundational memories of children through painting, cultivating their affection for and confidence in national culture.”

The seventh Wynn Cup – Macau Primary School Student National Education Drawing Competition was successfully held, receiving nearly 10,000 submissions. A total of 52 schools participated, representing 70 percent of all schools in Macau. In the Groups category, there were one Champion, two First Prizes, three Second Prizes, one Best Online Group Popularity award, three Third Prizes, one Creative Prize and 18 Merit awards. In the Campus category, eight Cultural and Creative Design awards were given out. The Individuals category had two Champions, 18 First Prizes, 39 Second Prizes, 50 Best Prizes, 121 Third Prizes and over 900 Merit award-winners. In addition, 61 teachers won the Gold Guiding Teacher award, while a further 15 won the Silver Guiding Teacher award. In total, nearly 1,200 teachers and students received awards this year. A selection of 82 drawings was also on display at Wynn Palace during the day of the event, to showcase the creativity and artistry of Macau’s children as well as their admiration for Chinese traditional culture. In addition, this year's event introduced an AR element for the first time, collaborating with a local innovation design company to use the technology to showcase prize-winning works in the Groups category.

At the awards ceremony, a fashion show titled “Twenty-Four Solar Terms” was presented by Wynn in partnership with the Macau Productivity and Technology Transfer Center, where local designers showcased a variety of parent-child fashion outfits interpreting this year’s theme. In addition, the outfits were worn by students of the Premier School Affiliated to Hou Kong Middle School, working together to create a wonderful children's art festival/. The fashion show also invited representatives from overseas and local apparel retail industries to participate, providing a platform for direct communication and networking between local clothing designers and buyers through the fashion show. The event also involved a cultural market and game booths themed around promoting traditional crafts, including a world heritage watercolor workshop organized by the Cultural Affairs Bureau, Chinese culture and Han-style clothing exhibitions, a traditional pitch-pot game, as well as fragrant sachet and Chinese painting workshops.
