Macau, July 23, 2018 – Wynn has always emphasized the development and nurturing of local talents. Through various initiatives, including sponsoring a number of scholarships at education institutions, Wynn provides development opportunities for young people to help unleash their potential and succeed in today's rapidly changing society. In support of the long-term development of the University of Macau (UM) and its Asia-Pacific Academy of Economics and Management (APAEM), Wynn Resorts (Macau) S.A. has donated MOP 80 million to the University of Macau Development Foundation (UMDF), a move that represents one of its most far-reaching corporate social responsibility initiatives.

 

At the cheque presentation ceremony, Ms. Linda Chen, Vice Chairman and Executive Director of Wynn Macau, Limited presented the cheque to the UMDF, and was received by Dr. Lam Kam Seng Peter, University Council Chair / Chair of the Trustees Committee of UMDF, and Prof. Yonghua Song, UM Rector / Vice Chair of the Executive Committee of UMDF. Wynn believes that the younger generation plays an indispensable role in the future development of society. Through the initiative, the company seeks to cultivate more outstanding leaders in the local community, so that they can play an important role in promoting the sustainable development of Macau, as well as meeting society's expectations of quality education. The event was also graced by the presence of Prof. Rico Long Wai Lam, Acting Dean of Faculty of Business Administration of UM, Mr. Peng Chun Vong, Director of Alumni and Development Office of UM, and Ms. Katharine Liu, Senior Vice President of Communications of Wynn Macau and Wynn Palace.

 

Wynn is using the donation to support education development at the UM and the APAEM. As the base for cultivating leaders in Macau, the APAEM covers three areas of work including executive education, conferences and seminars, and research projects.

 

To date, the APAEM has organized and hosted various international conferences and seminars on different topics, and invited renowned economists, business management executives and Nobel laureates from around the world to deliver speeches to promote exchanges and cooperation between international experts. At the same time, the outstanding scholars at the APAEM lead a number of academic research projects and hold executive training courses across different industries, actively cultivating a new generation of leaders. The traditional emphasis on policy analysis and formulation also help the APAEM become the leading international center for the study of economic and business development for the Asia-Pacific region. In addition, the APAEM also published the "Report on the Recommendation of the 19 Measures from Premier Li Keqiang for Boosting the Substantiality and Diversification of the Economy of Macau" this year. The main topics included supporting Macau's development as an offshore renminbi financial centre; establishing a commercial and trade co-operation service platform between China and the Portuguese-speaking countries; creating a Sino-Portuguese economic and trade co-operation convention centre; pushing forward the development of maritime economy; fostering the development of Macau into a smart city; supporting Macau to annually host the Global Tourism Economy Forum; as well as conducting in-depth research on many other socio-economic issues.

 

With the ongoing support of Wynn, the APAEM has been organizing the "Global Leadership Development Program Series" since 2013. Four modules of seminars and exchange activities took place as part of the "Hospitality and MICE: Strategy, Growth and Management" program, organized in Hong Kong, Singapore, Seoul in South Korea and Guangzhou in Mainland China. The APAEM will launch the fifth module in late July this year, taking place in Japan in Kyushu and Nagasaki, part of a program on "International Integrated Resort Management". It will explore the theme of "Strategy, Development and Responsible Gaming in Kyushu Integrated Resort", with Macau scholars sharing their invaluable experience.

 

At the same time, Wynn has always supported the promotion of responsible gaming in the community. The University of Macau has been conducting long-term research on gambling problems, led by a team drawn from the guest services and gaming management courses. The goal is to optimize and enhance responsible gaming programs and initiatives in Macau, and promote the sustainable and healthy development of the gaming industry. Wynn recognizes the quality and reliability of the research done by the University of Macau. Therefore, it is hoped that the research team will also develop a long-term, in-depth piece of research themed on the development of the Macau SAR and the Greater Bay Area. As a next step, Wynn and the University of Macau will discuss the feasibility of setting up a database for SMEs in Macau, in hopes of enabling large businesses to support local SMEs in a more scientific way through comprehensive data analysis and research. Wynn will also work closely with each industry to build a mutually beneficial business environment. In the long term, Wynn and businesses in different industries will further integrate into the country's overall goal of sustainable development through the Greater Bay Area.

 

The donation is part of a commitment made by Wynn Resorts (Macau) S.A. to the UMDF in 2011. This continuous support has enabled the APAEM to conduct independent and groundbreaking research, with the academy backed by a strong teaching and advisory team made up of well-known scholars, including three Nobel Prize laureates who serve on its Honorary Advisory Board. Its goal is to establish a world-class research and advisory hub to develop regional policies and nurture the new generation of leaders for the Asia-Pacific region.
